Hi, fsck folk.

A speedier, more capacious machine is now available for the Moodle server on campus, so I am excited about migrating Moodle to the new computer. I want to make that migration as seamless and efficient as possible, with minimal disruption to the daily use that Moodle currently gets. I am very happy to hear any pointers folks have about undertaking that migration, since I've never undertaken a task like that before. Below is some relevant info and questions.

The current Moodle server is running Debian. Woody was originally installed on it, but now apt-get pulls Sarge packages for it off limestone. Now that apt-get has updated the server's packages to the Sarge distribution, does that mean I have Sarge running on the current server, or do I have some hybrid monstrosity of Woody and Sarge that just happens to work? Does a full update to Sarge require recompiling the kernel?

The reason I ask is because I want to install the latest release of Debian (which, I take it, is Sarge) on the new server, and it seems like the easiest thing to do is to install Sarge on the new machine and then rsync it up with the old server. But I'd be hesitant to do that, for fear of breaking some functionality on the new machine, if what I currently have running on the old machine is some strange hybrid of Woody and Sarge.

Am I correct in assuming that the easiest way to undertake the server migration is to install Sarge on the new machine and then use rsync to update the new computer with all the relevant data from the old one (assuming, of course, that the distro on the current Moodle server isn't some strange hybrid)? Or is there some better way? And am I failing to think of important considerations that I need to bear in mind as I make the migration? If from what I've said above it sounds like I am running some Woody/Sarge hybrid and for that reason you would advise against using rsync on the hard drive as a whole, would you recommend my selectively copying over Moodle directories and Mailman directories (I have a mailing list running on Moodle, too)
to the new machine?

Finally, is there anything ITS or I need to do for the new machine to be recognized as moodle.truman.edu? Or is plugging the new computer into the static IP port of the current Moodle server sufficient? I know that I previously gave Jim McNabb the MAC address of the current Moodle server when we were originally setting the server up, so I assume I need to relay the MAC address of the new one to him as well to get the new machine recognized as moodle.truman.edu?

Thanks for any pointers and advice you can offer.
