Gentium has been around for a while, but it wasn't always free, and for a
while it didn't have an italic face.  It's a really nice design, in my
opinion.  The TeX font people are very interested in packaging it--both for
the face itself and for the exercise in encoding all those characters.  They
seem to be waiting for its release in OpenType format, which is supposed to
happen "soon."
