I never used cadaver to edit a site here at truman. Ubuntu/gnome can access WebDav if you type in dav:// in the address bar or use "connect to server". I get prompted for a password only when I try to write to a file, I've never needed to enter a password just to list directories or read files. Just something to try real quick...
