So I'm working a project that involves a database and I'm wondering which is more standard, MySQL or PostgresQL. Coming from Truman I used MySQL and Oracle. At work I've used Oracle frequently, and MySQL and Oracle have very similar syntax. Switching to PostgresQL is definitely a possibility as its just a little bit different syntax, but still basically the same underneath.

Is there one that's more standard across open source projects? I am not sure anyone will use the project I'm working on, but I'd like to use the more common database system. Any pros/cons/general feedback is appreciated.

FYI - I'm running on the vanilla debian with no GUI (which comes with PostgresQL by default if you tell it you want a database during install).

Thanks

Chris
