My knowledge might be outdated, as I no longer seek VPS for a long time. 

This might be a good start:

I've heard good things about http://www.slicehost.com/ 

Downside is that if you need Windows, then this is not for you.

If you need something for a couple of weeks or Windows is needed, then
Amazon EC2 might be your best bet. About $30 if you turn the (lowest
performance) instance on all day long for a month. Pay as you go.

If you need something that doesn't need to be connected to from the
internet all times, probably you should just pull your old computer out
of your closet, install a server OS on it (or run VirtualBox Headless --
this is cool), setup Dynamic DNS and add some NAT rules to your router.
