Jason asked: > How about the idea of part time employment for college/uni students to do > just that - write code or otherwise contribute to FS projects?
I agree with some other comments that employment may be a bit fiddly due to taxes and other administration that AFFS currently isn't configured for. If employment was offered by AFFS giving a grant to an intermediary, then I think that's just the grants programme again. I like the idea of scholarship or sponsorship that has been suggested. I think the direct paid project (seasons of code) and prize competitions already have enough offers in the UK for now, and sponsorships maybe could be compatible with the paid projects and prizes. It should be a fairly familiar and well-documented system to many involved, although it may take a while to get the AFFS scheme into whatever directories and so on of offers. However, I'm not sure this should be limited to college/uni students. State-regulated education is in a mess today IMO, so I suggest leaving the door open to other sorts of students if possible. Also, let's prefer candidates who offer some small identifiable thing back for suppporters to see as a direct result of the sponsorship.
