You know, there is one method that never sees much discussion, even
though it is probably the most effective physical destruction method. 
It is much better the using a ?"shredder"? as one person above
mentioned (or another, who laughably claims to use a sledgehammer). 
What is this method?  Why, thermite!  fill a ceramic crock (such as
old sourkraut crocks) with thermite (easily homemade), drop the drives
in, and light the thermite...  you end up with literal slag.
