As I look out across our community, the conglomeration of opposed forces that often
collide on mailing lists and IRC, I am sad. Why am I sad? The reason should be
obvious to all but the slowest among you: the Black Hat movement is doomed to an
enforced convalesence at the hands of the Security Industry at large.

How do I know this? Am I a crazed loon with absolutely no regard for logic? Perhaps.
Am I Nostradamus? Most definitely. The real reason, however, is painfully apparent,
if only you'd take a look around. Historically, the underdogs don't win--it's a sad
state of affairs. Sure, once in a thousand tries the Greek basketball team might
vanquish the Dream Team, but in the more important realm of politics, dissent is
always squashed eventually.

Take a look around. Where's the Hippy movement? Gone. The Punk movement? Gone, and
later resurrected in a commercialised form. The list of exterminated or assimilated
subcultures could go on forever. Make no mistake: it is the nature of the dominant
class to either destroy dissenting opinions, or incorporate them into its own sphere
of activity. This tendency extends to all spheres of life. It is the reason why you
see sheep who are fans of supposedly "out-there" musical artists like "Papa Roach",
and "Ja Rule". It's also the reason teen movies are so popular, and you can bet your
bottom dollar it is the reason why hackers are being recruited and indoctrinated by
commercial entities.

But why should I weep for a movement that is often characterised and marred by the
activities of a posse of sub-par juvenile delinquents who possess no actual clue as to
the vital importance of their struggle? Why should Jesus give a flying fuck? A lot
of so called Black Hats are nothing more than insecure, scared little children. A lot
of so called Black Hats wish to gain a feeling of importance, and perhaps notoriety,
by attempting to convey some sort of confused, possibly retarded, and half thought out
ideology in the form of a website defacement. What is the point in crying if this
milk is spilled?

There is a big point, one which has lain sadly overlooked. It is the duty of the
people to resist the insidious tactics that the dominant class employ in order to
maintain their historical hegemony. There is no good or evil, merely privileged and
unprivileged, authorised and unauthorised, us and them. But who decides what is
"correct", who decides who "we" and "they" are? The dominant class of course, and
they did not achieve ascendency because they're a lovely bunch of chaps who never
thought ill of anyone. Dominance is maintained through a complex process, one which
is unknown to most of society, and one which functions to the detriment of the
majority.

To maintain power, one must first have a coordinated set of discourses. A discourse
is a set of coherent ideas, or "knowledge", that pertains to any particular subject
area. It's easy to see what the dominant discourse is with regard to Black Hats.
According to mainstream society, hackers are bad. They are evil, possibly terrorists,
and they most definitely eat babies. This is of course, not necessarily true,
although it is popularly accepted as being so.

A discourse, by itself, means little; any fool on the street can spout his opinion,
but it's most likely that nobody will listen to him. The difference with a dominant
discourse is that it is supported and heartily endorsed by the dominant class
(politicians, corporations etc). Why do they support it? Because it's in their
interests, either financial or otherwise. Since the dominant class controls most
infrastructure, including the mass media, it's quite easy for them to spread their
discourse; over time this becomes "common sense" to the public, it becomes hegemony.

Now, contrary to popular opinion, there is nothing morally wrong with the Black Hat
movement, it is, however, in direct opposition to the controlling interest of the
dominant class. Therefore it is most likely destined to die (unlikely) or be
assimilated (likely) if it continues to operate in its current capacity. And this is
wrong, ideally the values and opinions of the Black Hat movement, if conveyed
coherently, should command authenticity. Additionally, the movement should have an
inherent right to its autonomy. The assumption that a dominant opinion is
automatically veridical, fair, and right is completely wrong. Power does not
automatically equate with justice; in fact it very rarely does.

The dominant class, by necessity, needs to be kept in check--this is a basic tenet for
a properly functioning democracy. It is universally acknowledged amongst all Smart
People that a complete concentration of power is unhealthy; this is why commerical
monopolies are illegal in many countries worldwide. Dissent does not mean evil,
dissent means oppression. Why do people dissent? Because they are oppressed. If
nobody on Earth was oppressed, there would be no dissent. Why is there no dissent
from corporations? Why have the Church and Government historically despised dissent?
It's quite easy to see: the scales are already tipped heavily in their favour. Why
should they want things to change? They'd be idiots to support dissenting opinions.

This is the major concept that is overlooked by countless hoardes of smelly
protestors; a frontal attack on a dominant and closed system of beliefs is unlikely to
be successful. This is due to the fact that the dominant (read: conservative) class
of society will absorb any attacks, and in future use them to strengthen its own point
of view. No true power can ever be gained or consolidated through the use of blind
protest and disagreement. This is why the Black Hat movement as it is now known has
little hope if it continues to operate in such a naive manner.

The majority of the players in this game are unwitting pawns; they pick their sides
according to what life, and the media, has taught them. The mentality of the average
immature White Hat is, "I am a good boy". Laughable? Yes. But how about the
mentality of the average immature Black Hat, which is this: "I am a bad boy". How is
this any better or worse? I fail to see the distinction. What most people don't
realise is that "good" and "evil" are false concepts, which have been constructed by
controlling parties in order to maintain their own power--no matter what the expense
to those who do not agree.

Most White and Grey Hats serve a cause which they will never fully be a part of; they
are seen by the Security Industry as resources, and as such they are exploited. In a
way it's kind of laughable and pathetic, but, being Jesus, I feel for the little
fellows--maybe some can be converted and thus salvaged. Perhaps the most concerning
part of the whole affair is the fact that a lot of Black Hats (the people who are in a
position, due to their opinions and skills, to effect change) actively involve
themselves in activities which have an entirely self defeating effect on their cause.
These things combine, like Voltron, to make baby Jesus cry.

PS. [EMAIL PROTECTED], whoever you are (I actually should know, being omniscient
and all that), God will forgive you for your errors--it's not your fault that you've
been indoctrinated by The Swine.
