Not really trying to surprise anyone.  Just another reason to upgrade to
Panther.

Although, I tested FreeBSD 5.1-CURRENT and RedHat 9.0 and neither of which had
this "feature".

Most Unix operating systems have switched to using a more secure encryption mechanism than the old-style crypt(3).
