There *are* punishments. You don't HAVE to use Microsoft, you know.. Yes, there's costs involved (retraining, etc) even in moving to a "free" alternative. On the other hand, there's costs involved in staying with MS. It's like cars - when the price of gas is sitting at $3/gallon, the companies making fuel-inefficient cars notice it on their sales figures....
