Anything not plaintext just doesn't belong on a security mailing list.
This has nothing to do with plaintext messages. multipart/mixed is still plain text - just with headers separating sections.
Myself? I don't use digests myself, but I see no reason not to allow readers to use multipart/mixed digests.
