Supposedly, during the beginning of the Impressionist era, two
French impressionist painters were known to be at odds with each
other. At one point, a journalist interviewing one of them attempted
to stir up trouble by asking for a candid opinion of the other.
"Well," said the painter, trying to be polite, "I think he's
talented at what he does. He has done some paintings that I've liked
very much."
The disappointed journalist retorted, "Well, that's very different
from what HE says about YOU!"
At which point the painter shrugged and replied, "Perhaps we're both
wrong...."
