Ken Swarmer: T-ball

I was recently on vacation and came across this story:

(Jefferson Field AB) Talks between Maintown Kindergarten T-ballers and
coaches broke down Sunday over several unresolved issues creating the longest
player walkout in history.

A nine-day cooling off period was instated Monday by league commissioners as
representatives from both sides returned home to consult with their
constituents.

T-ball games have been canceled since June 22nd and some parents feel hel
plessly caught in the middle.

"My sons baseball career is hanging in the balance here," explained Lou
Sinclair, father of Maintown first baseman Johnny Ball Hog. "Lets get the
politics out of the game and play ball."

A Key issue still on the bargaining table includes field sitting down time,
hats that are too big, and snacks, according to siblings who asked not to be
identified.

"Im not motivated by snacks, this isnt about snacks," said Linda
"Dandelion Picker" Johnson. "Its just that snacks equal respect. If some
teams are getting candy bars and Im given a Fig Newton, then theres a lack
or respect."

The number one unresloved issue for the players union is full disclosure of
the final score.

Billy "Im Tired" Lewis, says hes been manipulated. "Dont tell me it was
a tie, or that no one keeps score. I dont buy it. They know who won. So
tell us!"

Last week, a strike vote was delayed when coaches agreed to suspend trades
for three years. Players argued that since everyone has a 1,000 batting av
erage, whats the point.

The issue of cheering was also resolved.

"The kids didnt want to say two, four, six eight, who do we appreciate."
explained Coach Charles Harding. "They said it was lame."

The players in good faith also dropped two arguments last week. They were a
health plan for chronic shoulder pain stemming from multiple swipes into the
tee, and an elimination of outfield positions since no one hits it past the
bases.

An opinion poll released Monday showed public sentiment drawn down the middle.
"In my day, we didnt have all these lawyer dads trying to coach ball," said
Ira Greenberg of Mainville. "Our coaches came from the steel mills they
knew what T-ball was all about."

Others blame the players for the impasse.

"Id like to give them al a swat and a cold bath," said Vera Jackson of
Maintown. "If this was my kid, I'd give him something to cry about."

League organizers said if a compromise isnt met soon, T-ball will be
canceled for the season to make room for fall soccer leagues.
