Even if that cell phone was made of pure gun powder, there is no way in hell it would break a spine. The dude worked at a quarry and what probably happened is that something really heavy fell on him and crushed the phone (and of course him) which caused the phone to melt down. Besides, if it exploded and generated that kind of force, there would be nothing left of the phone.
