There have been a few GIT issues due to the ill-defined nature of the contents of certain Mac file system types. If you read a directory, sort by name, and store result in some other place, and repeat that experiment after an OS upgrade, you might get different results. He's probably alluding to this issue. This is indeed very broken, and can harm anything that mechanically processes directory contents (and needs to keep separate meta-data). It's not something that the typical Mac audience has to worry about, I guess.
