"It's been a roller coast ride for the National Reconnaissance Office, the
intelligence agency that builds the country's spy satellites.
Shortly after Sept. 11, a former top CIA official told me the secretive space
agency had a new slogan plastered inside the building
-- BACK TO BLACK -- an indication perhaps, that NRO had found a new sense of
purpose in the war on terror (or at least a new reason for secrecy).

Well, it could possibly really be lights out soon for the agency that has been
at the center of some notable recent failures (regardless of where the fault
lies for those failures).
The Allard Commission on US national security space is about to recommend the
NRO be shuttered once and for all.
"The commission recommends eliminating the National Reconnaissance Office - the
agency that helped win the Cold War, and whose very existence was secret until
the early 1990s -
as a separate entity and removing executive authority for space systems from
the Air Force, transferring both functions into a single new organization,"
reports Bill Sweetman on Aviation Week's ARES blog."
