I usually cremate mine and blast them to outer space.  But I understand this 
might not fit into everyone's budget.

I've always been partial to thermite.  But if you're for the less 
dramatic, I've heard drilling a drill a hole through the drive and soaking 
it in some nice salt water is effective.
