We live in a world (most of us) that is incredibly safe by historic standards.
Hence the rise of Extreme Sports and other risky behavior.
For my part I am glad to live in a world where it is still possible to
willingly do stupid - and even potentially fatal - things. I've done all sorts
of them, and given that (to this point) I am still alive to describe them I can
verify that they have generally kicked serious ass. From sailing small boats
in shrieking storms to running full-tilt from rock to rock (don't slip!) to
tree-bashing (duck! [that's downhill skiing in the woods for you flatlanders]),
these are among the most alive moments of my life.
