It got made into a major movie, with a major advertising budget.  (I understand 
half the cost of making a movie goes into advertising it: the higher the 
special 
effects budget the more people you have to con into buying tickets in order to 
pay 
it off.)  Therefore, more of the tin-foil hat crowd will have been exposed.

And, if you keep your mind sufficiently open, people will throw a lot of 
garbage 
into it.
