Why is that?

The "basics" is high-school science. It's the "scientific-method", "thermal 
radiation", and "absorption spectra". I remember learning all three in 
high-school.

The basics of the skeptics argument is about the scientific-method 
specifically. Skeptics believe that computer models should not replace 
empirical evidence, and that historic reconstructions should be reproducible. 
The hacked e-mails don't show a hoax or a fraud to make up data, but they do 
show a conspiracy to prevent their results from being reproduced by the public. 
How can anybody in civilized society not be qualified to understand and have an 
opinion on the reproducibility of results?
