What I've told people the last 2 years or so is "Fedora or Ubuntu - final choice based on what the geeky kid next door will help with if you buy the pizza". Seriously - Windows is ubiquitous enough that you can *always* find somebody you can bribe with beer/pizza to help. Linux, you probably want to be a bit picky about local liveware support for the distro you choose.
