An interesting question is "by which metric(s)?"

Among those which I think merit consideration (and I'm sure there
are more) are:

        - connection attempts
        - message volume
        - rejected message volume
        - delivered message volume
        - unique (or semi-unique) message payloads
        - number of clients
        - number of sending systems (including zombies)
        - number of targeted servers
        - number of targeted addresses
        - delivery percentage

Of course the problem with many of these is that even estimating them
is difficult, and measuring them may be effectively impossible.
