Because they're trying to differentiate their markets. No self-respecting Feminist from the Twin Cities buys their books NEW!
Seriously, Amazon has been the poster child for how the completely unimaginative have managed to profit from taking the obvious/other people's ideas and applying large amounts of capital to it. Examples: McDonalds: (Ray Kroc made money copying someone else's business idea). Dell: As if there were no build to order computer stores around, in just about every town, at the time. <insert chain restaurant pretending to be ethnic here> Every mutual fund and 401K company except for Fidelity and Vanguard Every big box store except for Wal-Mart. And... Amazon, who based their company on Wal-Mart's IP. http://news.cnet.com/Wal-Mart-sues-Amazon,-others/2100-1001_3-216812.htm l No wonder Bezos files patents on everything.
