This press release is an amazing exercise in arbitrariness and hysteria. I just glanced through the referenced patent application and it has absolutely nothing to do with the data contents of Wifi packets, which was the whole point of the controversy with Street View. The patent has to do with physical geolocation of access points and devices connected to them; whatever the merits of this technique, there's no evidence that they were employing it or gathering the data necessary for it in Street View.
