I PrOmIsE ThIs WiLl Be My LaSt PoSt InTo ThIs ThReAd. Honest!
Okay, here's the deal. Stock traders, et.al, don't know nuthin' about Java
except what they read or hear. They haven't written code in Java, they
probably don't know developers who have, and who will tell you its really
"Write Once - Debug Everywhere". Market drivers are pointy-haired boss
types. They don't actually touch the technology, they just read the HYPE
surrounding it.
Now, I've already explained the H:h ratio (HTML vs. Hype) before, so I won't
here. Needless to say, Java has a huge H:h ratio compared to CF. Therefore,
people who want to buy tech stocks are vulnerable to pick up high H:h
technologies, simply because they've been exposed to them.
The sad part is, this alone is sufficient to drive the market. Its a case of
the self-fulfilling prophecy, the bank collapse started by an untrue rumor
of a bank collapse.
A good high-tech parallel is the race to develop fast CPUs. CPU speed really
isn't the thing that makes a 'fast' computer, its the integration of all the
parts, bus speed, cache, etc. However, the public doesn't know zip about
these things, and the hypesters happened to latch on to CPU speed early on
in the PC Hype Wars. Hence, CPU speed has become what people define a 'fast'
computer by; regardless of actual real-world performance.
Java is hype. Java sells magazines. Java sells books and e-newsletters. Java
might even drive the stock market, but I still say its hype.
And that's my last comment on this, I've got work to do!
