Alan,

Interesting perspective. Not only does VP still exist, but despite three
years on the current version (8.0), it's functionality and capabilities
still exceed every one of its competitors. No discount racking yet.

Note: although your contention that the "auto-TOC/index thingy" is
available in Word is technically true, it's kind of like saying that
because I have a 1963 Volkswagen, I therefore have a race car. I wouldn't
run the risk of a large or important book project using Word. Anything over
one section and/or 50 pages and/or including graphics, and it starts
blowing itself up. This usually mangles the files it's working with, as
well. WordPerfect is even worse. Word processors try to cover the
publishing space to sell more product, but none of them can really provide
adequate publishing tools.

Just my .02c

Ventura Publisher still ExIsTs??? Did you pick that up in one of those
"$9.95 Software Specials" bins at K-Mart? Maybe it was on one of those
"10,000 Shareware Programs For Windows 3.1" CDs... heh heh heh

Actually, you can do the auto-TOC/index thingy in MS Word, I believe that
feature gets installed as part of installing the full Acrobat product.

To be sure, though, creating a truly useful PDF requires substantial time;
and really is an unappreciated art.
