Well, when you're just starting out, it's rather confusing when
you read something in a textbook as being one way and then see
the practical example as another.

If that's the case, it seems to me you're defeating the core set
of recommended Fusebox techniques.

Please, don't get me wrong, I think the book is great. I like the
fusebox methodology and realize that each developer will adapt
what they like and ignore what they don't. It's this kind of
flexibility that has drawn me to the Fusebox methodology and
that's why I'm trying to learn it.
