Right. The UUID algorithm uses time, but also space (your IEEE 802 Internet 
node address), which is why it's called a "Universal" Unique Identifier. If 
two machines generated a UUID at exactly the same millionth of a second 
point, they would still yield unique numbers.  ...also explains why some of 
the octets seem to stay the same when you're generating them at the same 
spatial node.

The UUID specification actually supports very high allocation rates: 10 
million per second per machine if you need it.

Pretty amazing, eh?  ;-)
