Although we use Live Stats as well, I wouldn't exactly call it great. The
software has no ability to recover from even minor problems.

For instance, we followed their instructions on setting up log files.
Usually, we zip up and archive old log files. However, in a few cases, this
was never done. After a directory gets a certain amount of log files in it,
Live Stats can't handle it and starts corrupting its own databases.

No matter what problem we seem to encounter, the solution always seems to be
to destroy and recreate the virtual servers. The problems are multifarious,
but the effect is always the same, data corruption.

This goes for the mail engine as well. One night, while in the process of
setting up a new mail server, Live Stats could not talk to the mail server.
Live Stats choked, could not send any more mail. We tried hunting through
its databases to see if we could manually send out the mail, but that was
pretty futile between the manner in which the information was stored and the
data corruption that had taken place. The fix to the problem, of course, was
to delete every file that had something to do with mail and lose all the
previous messages.

Every time something like this happens, it takes time to fix, and we look
like amateurs. Of course there is no way to really monitor Live Stats, so we
have to rely on the customers to tell us when our own server is misbehaving.

All of that said, I have experience with a couple other packages, most
notably (infamously) WebTrends. Without going on another diatribe about my
experiences with that product line, I would have to recommend Live Stats as
well.

On the positive side, the folks over at MediaHouse have a fairly patient and
responsive support team. It seems like we've been able break Live Stats
every way possible and they always take the time to research our questions
and get back to us in a timely manner.

The price isn't bad, either. :)
