First let me say thanks to all those who donated. I will place their names
on a donations page after Shabbos. I won't post the dollar amounts so as to
not make anyone feel bad that they gave more or less than anyone else. The
very thought counts.
Second let me apologize to Marc Funaro and anyone else who took offense to
my explaining the list situations. I don't mean to come of critical to the
comments about the list speed and stability, I'm fully aware of the
frustrations. As to why things go bad:
1. The list stops for a while. This is because post.office chokes on certain
posts. I've written a scheduled monitor system that scans the list so see if
its up and if not (after 5 bad attempts) runs a template to shut down the
mail server, clean out all posts that have the problem header, move all
posts from the undeliver directory to the spool and restart the list. This
was a little flaky when I first put it in but is now going perfectly.
2. The list is slow. There is a minimum 4 minute wait on list posts. This is
due to all posts being parsed by a CF template. This removes all HTML
attachments, viruses, footers, etc. After this template, posts are sent to
the list. In some cases (usually about 100 or so a day) a post may be queued
up because the mail server is having problems sending it. There are many
reasons for this which I can detail later if you want. The result is that
for these people, their posts may come an hour or more later. This is
unavoidable at the moment as its more a net thing than anything else. I'll
look into some form of secondary DNS or tracing to help here if it exists.
3. You can receive posts but not send. This is because the list only allows
posts from the same address as the person subscribed with. I'm looking at
writing a patch for this as well.
As you can see, I've written a LOT of patch code for the list and its all
working rather well. I've promised to send it to some people and will once a
free second comes up (Sunday). The real issue is post.office. I'm moving
from it as soon as I can. The three options are:
1. iMS - needs a solid listserver program which howie is writing into
fusionmail 2.0
2. Lyris - costs a bundle, but I may have a backer and the list participants
to help for it.
3. Linux - This requires a new box as most of the stuff on HoF is in windows
format (in one way or another). I will explore this.
There are about 20 lists on the box as it stands now with about 4000-5000
people all together. Another box is a definite possibility and something I'm
going to explore as well. I've been putting out fires, dealing with work,
baby and more and am looking to make the time needed to make more changes.
There's more to say and do but sundown is coming fast. Let me just say that
changes are coming and a lot of the resources that I haven't linked in will
be done soon. I'm dealing with some legal from my work with CA so I don't
want to make any 'see-able' changes on HoF. Here are some links to resources
to keep you happy.

I've got a lot more, but this should keep people happy over the weekend. FA
will be back up and running next week as well. We've got an issue running
and more work to be released. No rest for the wicked. ;>
