It almost seems as if you would need a com object on the SF server that can
communicate with the serial port to open the drawer.

I am working on a fusebox cash register/inventory/web shopping cart system.
Everything is going great except that I don't know how to have the system
kick open the cash drawer at the end of a store sale.
