Is there a reason to use absolute paths?  What is wrong with relative
paths...I always use relative paths so my applications will work wherever.

you need a mapping of "/" to your webroot.  then you base all your absolute 
calls off that.  so yeah, to the best of my knowledge you do need atleast 
one mapping.  Then if you need to make calls outside of your webroot, 
you'll need more mappings to get there.
