Hi David,

Text columns are a per-frame setting. You can't switch the number of columns within a text frame.

The layout you describe is extremely complex. I think it can be done, but this level of template-building is getting beyond the scope of what can be worked out on this forum, or even by Support.

That said, here are some things I know which may help you:
* A table can exceed the width of the column into which it is set. You'll get a warning in the log file, but the full table will still be output on the page (up to the page boundaries, of course).
* You can use text measurement to figure out how deep a table will be.
* You can use a multi-column table to emulate multi-column text.
* Tables can use cell spanning to emulate a switch between single and multiple columns. * You can use empty table cells, or empty inline graphics, to effect a specific amount of vertical or horizontal shift.

So, you should be able to measure the height of the first table, then figure out how many cells of the second table you can output in the frame. Then, either make the second table have multiple columns to emulate two-column text, or put everything into a two-column frame, letting the first table overrun into both columns, and output some empty cells from the second table to fill the first table's depth in the second column. This will take some trial and error, but I think it will work.

When I composed this scenario, I get an error message that states...

"The specified Keep conditions could not be honored in the flow <TableOne>. Text is
truncated." And no text at all shows up. I get the correct amount of
pages, just no text on them.

Q1. What is the error message referring to?

Well, it's hard to know exactly without seeing your job, but you probably have some keep conditions in your table, where certain rows are supposed to be kept together, or perhaps just regular text keeps such as a "Keep with next paragraph" or "Widows" condition that couldn't be met. You might have to strip things down one table cell or line of text at a time to isolate the problem.

Q2. Can a text box on a Template Page be tied to another text box on an
Overflow Page?

Yes, although you can get into some confusing situations where multiple instances of the template frame text are overflowing to multiple sets of new overflow pages. Template pages may ultimately be a part of the solution, but I think they're a red herring, and you should be able to do what you need with regular text frames and text measurement.

Q3. Is there a way to switch from a single column text box to a
multi-column and later back to a single column again?

Not within the same frame. Although, you can certainly link a single- column frame to a multi-column frame within the same text flow, or use a table to emulate multiple frames.

Dan
