To the best of my knowledge Fusion Pro does not already do this, but I wish
it did: A check box called "Mark as Proof" that would take only the first
record and set the background to a select color.

As part of our workflow, when creating proofs (hard or soft), I go and mark
up the first record with all the areas that are variable. This allows
clearly delineates areas as static or not, making it easier on everyone in
the proofing process. This is especially true for areas that do not
initially appear to be variable (e.g. a message that is variable, but
changes infrequently, so would not be noticed as such with only a few
samples).

Cheers.
