Why not try putting everything into one rule? Try this....
var lineOut = "";
if (Field("Direct") != "")
lineOut += "Tel: " + Field("Direct");
if (Field("Ext") != "") {
if (lineOut != "") {
lineOut += " Ext: " + Field("Ext");
}
else {
lineOut += "Ext: " + Field("Ext");
}
}
if (Field("Fax") != "") {
if (lineOut != "") {
lineOut += " * Fax: " + Field("Fax");
}
else {
lineOut += "Fax: " + Field("Fax");
}
}
return lineOut;
This should do what you want in one rule instead of three. It will build up
only those rules that are necessary into a defined output line called lineOut.

This almost works!
However, it is conflicting with another rule. I have three rules that control
one line of text in the layout.
First rule, titled DirectReturn:
if (Field("Direct") == "")
return "";
else
return "Tel: "+(Field("Direct"))
Second rule, titled ExtReturn:
if (Field("Ext") == "")
return "";
else
return "Ext: "+(Field("Ext"))
Third Rule, titled FAXReturn:
> Var1 = Field("Direct");
> Var2 = "* Fax: "+(Field("FAX"));
> if ((Field("FAX") == "") && (Field ("Direct") == "")) return ""; else
> return Var1 + Var2;
When I compose, I get:
Tel: 555-111-2222 Ext: 123 555-111-2222 * Fax: 555-222-3333
The direct field reiterates twice. All three fields have to be optional. The
bullet has to separate the Fax field and anything that comes before it, unless
there is nothing before it, the I need just the Fax field.
I suppose the best thing would be to contain all three into one rule, but that
is beyond my limited ability.
I appreciate your help more than I can properly convey.
