There's some options out there for converting FusionPro output to IJPDS.
It would be better if FusionPro would support this natively because
there are a lot of Versamarks and inkjet head out there. The
organization I am involved with now, will produce several hundred of
millions of personalized pieces with IJPDS this year.

Before I get into the options, my past showed that these transforms are
not always reliable or fast enough to drive these devices. So you have
to test them a bit on your own. Most of the organizations who do this
type of transform can help with testing. All cases, this transform is
expensive in dollars, hardware, time, and resources.

First, Kodak sells its own Versamark PDF Transform Software
<http://tinyurl.com/28s3r9>. This is not really what you want for VDP.
Its more for taking a PDF and using it as a background static. You then
lay more IJPDS on top of this, Not really VDP.

A better option is to go with a company who specializes in transforms.
For example, Solimar Systems also in San Diego
<http://www.solimarsystems.com/> has may times in the past claimed to
transform PDF to IJPDS with pretty good rates. I think they have toned
down a bit on marketing IJPDS, but I would be surprised if they do not
support this transform in their Print Director Product.

Emtex also does some transforms to IJPDS. Last I heard you need to ask
them to do it custom but are geared more toward legacy enterprise
Systems.

Most use desktop VDP tools that create native IJPDS: GMC, Group1,
Printsoft, Papyrus possibly Exstream? They range from tens of thousands
to 100 thousands dollars in cost per driver (ouch!). And, IMHO, they do
not handle color or many other more dynamic features as well as
FusionPro. Its hard to build any of these into the pre-press desktop
publishing side. But you have to take in consideration composition speed
also. What does Versimark print, almost 500 pages a minute? Fast! And
the 4 1/2" inkjet heads are even faster.

Perhaps the PDF Print Engine will someday replace the need for some of
the proprietary formats like IJPDS we have all learned to love to hate

I just heard I will be talking at Xplor at On-Demand '08 in Boston in
March. I will be the session #11 Workflow . I imagine I could touch on
some of this stuff if anyone want to come and see be talk? I notice more
people show up if I do some shameless self promotion ;)
