If you're using quotes in the returned tag, they have to be double-quotes, not single-quotes. Try this instead: return '<color rgb="ff0000">' + "g" + "</color>"; Or, more simply: return '<color rgb=ff0000>' + "g" + "</color>"; Or even: return '<color rgb=ff0000>g</color>'; Remember to use the Validate button and make sure that the tags you're returning are valid.
