What platform are you on (Windows or Mac), and on what platform was the file exported from Excel? If you export and compose on the same platform, the "special" characters should be in the same encoding that FusionPro expects (Latin 1 on Windows, Mac Roman on Mac). Otherwise, you will need to either convert the file to the proper encoding, or use entities. Please refer to the FusionPro Tag Reference Guide for more information on entities.
Note that any text entered into the Variable Text Editor dialog in FusionPro will automatically be converted to the proper encoding when moving your job across platforms; however, it's the user's responsibility to ensure that any external files, such as your input file, are in the proper encoding for the platform (or use entities).
