First, a bit of background: we want to use FusionPro Server as one of the composition backends for our own web2print system. This is our own web2print system not the ASP (yes we also like the ASP, but just not for everything). The typical development environment for myself and my other developers is that we check out the sources and run on our own machine. We are fairly split on our development platforms: Linux, Windows, and on Mac OSX. We deploy remotely at a SAS70 data center on Linux running Windows in emulation in order to run FP Server from the command line.

My question about Server is the licensing for development. Its my understanding we get only one license for the remotely deployed server for the Elite Package. We may get a reduction by buying a testing only environment FusionPro Server license. How does this work? It seems not totally plausible to license every single machine we develop on. I have 3. And my developers typically have 2, a desktop and laptop. That adds up fast. 10+ license will only scrape the surface. Likewise, its only a portion of the web2print system. Is our architecture for development/QA environment fundamentally flawed? For instance, if we simply have another dependancy we just say install it for development and just expect that the dependancy is easily obtainable.

How do we develop against FusionPro Server in a distributed environment? One way, I thought was to make a WSDL gateway to do the composition remotely. OTOH, it sounds like we will still need to get a license for testing unless we want to tap the same resources as our production server. The threading sounds like a pain also (esp its on top of the thready we are already doing for large compositions). Or perhaps there is a way to do something like what was done with FP Direct, but for Server. My concern is all the packing and unpacking that needs to occur. It just seems like a lot of work just to get around a licensing issue. In a more elaborate system we could send webservice request back and fourth and check file dates of every single file used by Server. Still sounds a bit like a pain. And how will we know what files to check?

How do others with large development teams develop with FusionPro Server? Do others find the licensing restrictive for large scale enterprise development? We do not run into this problem often because 90% of the other tools we use are open-source or written internally. Nonetheless, we will really like to take advantage of some of FusionPro Server's power.
