Question: Is there any way to access the built-in $pagenum value in a
rule?
No.
I've seen several posts on the forum asking this question, but I can't
find an answer. I tried some tests, but I can't find a way to
define the
variable $pagenum that doesn't produce an error.
As I've said before, except in the case of specialized Callback rules,
all rules are evaluated on a per-record basis. There is no hook into
FusionPro's composition engine to evaluate a rule on a per-frame or
per-page basis. Therefore, there is no context in which a page number
can be accessed within a rule.
I'm making a template for a booklet, with overflow pages, but the
client
doesn't count the cover as page 1, they start on the first inside left
page. So I need to subtract 1 from each page number. I could
almost see
how to manually calculate the number of pages, and build rules for
creating my own variable, but since there are multiple overfloew
pages, I
have nowhere in the template to call a separate variable.
Sorry, but this isn't possible either. A bit of the reason why, if
you're interested: In a previous lifetime (the DL Formatter/
FrameMaker plug-in days), FusionPro had more options for controlling
page numbering through tagging. The philosophy behind FusionPro's
current incarnation as an Acrobat plug-in has always been to be more
WYSIWYG, so some of that functionality didn't really translate from
the old FrameMaker plug-in. Now, the pendulum is swinging back a bit
toward low-level programming of jobs, where people are doing more
complex things using more JavaScript and tagging, and of course,
Imposition. So the concept of how page numbering should work is a lot
more complicated. Restoring some of that more advanced page numbering
capability, and enhancing it to include things like sheet numbers for
Imposition, repeat counts, and per-page hooks into JavaScript, is
something we're looking into.
As for not counting the cover in the page numbering, I've seen a lot
of jobs where the cover is a completely separate composition, or a
separate document that's combined with the "inner" pages as part of a
job ticket after composition, or even after printing. Many customers
do this so that they can print the color covers and the black-and-
white inner pages on different presses. Anyone else want to share a
bit of insight into his or her workflow?
Also, since it's a booklet, the design calls for the page numbers to
appear on the outside edges, not the bound center. So left side for
odd
(inside front cover as page 1), and right side for even, pages.
Again,
this is only possible if I can access the variable in a rule, and
use that
to trigger two different text frames.
You can certainly have separate left and right Overflow pages, with
different layouts. That's the purpose of the "In Pairs" option of the
"Overflow text to new pages" mode in the Overflow Options dialog.
Does anyone have any advice on this, or other ways that I'm not
seeing to
accomplish some of my objectives?
Again, I think if you just use different Left and Right Overflow
pages, and possibly compose the cover page separately, that should
give you what you need.
