Frequently I get the completed pdf and build the variable txt right on top of it to ensure that i have the same kerning and line spacing - I haven't been successful in doing it any other way.

You might have to print out the original file (before you exported to a pdf) and when you get into Fusion Pro try different tracking percentages to see if you can match what was in the original file. by printing the fusion pro file out and comparing.
