It matters because I've seen A LOT of bugs in Excel when saving/exporting flat
files. Some of the issues that I have encountered include missing delimiter
characters when the last field of a record is blank (resulting in data errors
because some records are missing fields when, in fact, they aer not), extra
spaces being removed (like what you've reported), leading zeros from field
(such as a ZIP code field) being removed, and more.
Well, actually the problem I am describing is HAVING multiple spaces
in a data field, and when FusionPro reads that field, it truncates
that field at the second space, and from there, it seems to signal
this as being the end of the record.
There also seem to be other characters in a field that FusionPro
doesn't like. One being an apostrophe.
You are absolutely correct when you say that they are "supposed" to be the same
(and the use of the quote marks is very appropriate here, too). However...
What makes this even more annoying, IMNHO, are two things: a) it doesn't matter
if you are exporting a CSV file or a tab-delimited text file and b) the first
20 records or so usually export fine so if you just open the data in a text
editor and look at the first several records, everything seems to be in order.
Finally, thnk of it this way - if it didn't matter, how would I have known to ask?

There are some ways to fix the data (outside of Excel) before feeding it to
FusionPro. But first, how may records are in your data? That will help me
determine the best/fastest/easiest way for you to fix the data.
Well, I don't think the problem lies in what Excel is doing to the
file, but in how FusionPro is reading and interpreting the data.
Thanks for the help, Rob. Do you know if there is a list of what
characters FusionPro considering to be "legal" characters, and which
ones make it choke?
