Seeing that this final leg of my multiple page file template question excursion has stumped the forum and tenaciously persisting in my trials (with many errors!) I finally found out what the problem was.
For the Maestros: I clicked on my text template, edit text, paragraph and reduced the widow lines from 2 down to 1 and voila, now I can preview pdfs larger than 4.25" wide. Thanks again to David Sweet and Dan Korn for helping me with the Rule to get this going. I attempted stretching the width of the text frames outside of the box slightly larger than 8.5x11 but it didn't seem to help. The length of the graphic does not seem to be presenting the same issue however as I inserted an 8" long graphic and it previewed (though it still had to be 2up side by side).
