Could that be offset by adding a margin to the variable box? Can't remember if this is an option at the moment..

That is what I am currently using and after some more test, I am sure that
it is working by design.  It seems to center the text in reference to the
"short" lower case letters.  As a result, "tall" lower case letters and
upper case letters get closer to the top of the text box than to the
bottom of the text box.
