I am not prepared to give up democracy, though I will concede that your
scheme of an assembly chosen by lottery would be an improvement on what we
have now.

However, what is needed to make the system of representative democracy
workable is reform of political financing.

No corporation should be allowed to make any political donations. The
purpose of government is to maximize the wellbeing of citizens (real
persons) and hence corporations (fictional persons) should have no say in
the political process. There should also be a fairly low limit on individual
political contributions so that the rich do not have more influence than
ordinary people.

This would not produce nearly enough money to run a campaign. The difference
should be made up from the public treasury, allocating funds on the basis of
how many candidates a party runs.
