:(EU) EU/FRANCE/MAI: MR CHIRAC AND MR JOSPIN CONFIRM THEIR RESERVATIONS
: Paris, 07/08/1998 (Agence Europe) - In two letters sent to the French
:Communist Deputy Jean-Claude Lefort, the content of which is revealed in
:the daily L'Humanité, President Chirac and Prime Minister Lionel Jospin
:confirm French reservations about the project of a Multilateral Agreement
:on Investment. Jacques Chirac thus explains that the MAI will not be
:definitively concluded, from the European Union's point of view, until all
:the EU Member States are willing to do so in so far as the subjects covered
:come under both national competence and joint competence. Mr Jospin, for
:his part, stresses that "France will not sign the MAI if the cultural
:exception is challenged, if competition through the lowering of social
:standards and environmental protection standards is tolerated (...) and if
:the laws of extra-territorial range are made legitimate".
