UN STAFF COLLEGE WORKSHOP
ECONOMIC POLICY REFORM IN DEVELOPING AND TRANSITION COUNTRIES AND THE ROLE
OF INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTIONS
15-17 December 1997
Turin, Italy

Organizers: This workshop has been jointly designed by the United Nations
Staff College, ILO and the International Development Centre, University of
Reading, in consultation  with leading experts from the World Bank, IMF,
OECD, World Institute for Development Economics Research of the United
Nations University, and Overseas Development Institute, London.

Content:
The workshop will cover the following topics:

* the state-of-the-art on the theory and practice of economic policy reform
in developing and transition countries;

* the evolution of policies and activities of multilateral and bilateral
institutions providing financial and technical assistance to reforming
countries;

* the shifting role of  the state and of development co-operation given the
growing presence of private sector and non-governmental organizations as
development actors;

* the role of governance, democratization and institution-building in
economic policy reforms;

* recent findings from country surveys and academic literature regarding
the effects of economic reform measures on labour markets, income
distribution and poverty alleviation.

Participants: Senior staff from the UN system, including the Bretton Woods
institutions, other international and regional organizations and bilateral
donor agencies with responsibilities in economic policy reform and
structural adjustment programmes; policy-makers from developing,
transitional and developed economies; representatives of trade unions,
transnational corporations and NGOs; and leading academics.

Venue: International Training Centre of the ILO, Turin, Italy

Cost of attendance: US$ 1,800 covering tuition fees, full board and lodging
