Content: The workshop will cover the following topics: * the state-of-the-art on the theory and practice of economic policy reform in developing and transition countries; * the evolution of policies and activities of multilateral and bilateral institutions providing financial and technical assistance to reforming countries; * the shifting role of the state and of development co-operation given the growing presence of private sector and non-governmental organizations as development actors; * the role of governance, democratization and institution-building in economic policy reforms; * recent findings from country surveys and academic literature regarding the effects of economic reform measures on labour markets, income distribution and poverty alleviation. Participants: Senior staff from the UN system, including the Bretton Woods institutions, other international and regional organizations and bilateral donor agencies with responsibilities in economic policy reform and structural adjustment programmes; policy-makers from developing, transitional and developed economies; representatives of trade unions, transnational corporations and NGOs; and leading academics.
