URBANISATION OBSERVED
Workshop on European research in the South
Berlin - 12-14 February 1998

In 1995, academics, practitioners and researchers from various
European countries specialising in urban issues in the developing
countries of the South formed the "Network-Association of European
Researchers on Urbanisation in the South" (N-AERUS). The aim of N-
AERUS is to mobilise and develop European institutional and
individual research and training capacities on urban issues in Asia,
Africa and Latin America.

The forthcoming Workshop will be held at the Technical University of
Berlin between 12-14 February 1998. Researchers from a wide range
of European organisations will present and discuss research
activities, findings and recommendations on such key issues as
globalisation, governance, poverty elimination, popular participation,
access to secure land, decentralisation and public/private sector
partnerships with invited decision makers and representatives of
relevant European research funding agencies.

Discussions will focus on the following points :

* How can the combined efforts of European researchers improve
understanding of the ecological, social and economic processes of
urbanisation in the South?
* How can researchers and funding agencies best assist decision
makers and increase public awareness of key issues on urban
development?
* What are the main gaps in information and understanding on urban
issues which need to be filled?
* How can collaboration between researchers in Europe and Southern
countries, funding agencies and decision makers help to fill these
gaps?

The workshop is being organised by TRIALOG and the HABITAT
UNIT, Department of Architecture, Technical University of Berlin.
Guests are welcome.
