21Nov97 EU: EP/SOCIAL AFFAIRS - WORKERS IN THE FUTURE COMPANY.
PARLIAMENT AGREES WITH IDEAS IN THE DAVIGNON REPORT ON
INFORMATION/CONSULTATION OF WORKERS IN THE FUTURE "EUROPEAN COMPANY".

Strasbourg, 20/11/1997 (Agence Europe) - With adoption of the report by
German Christian Democrat Winfried Menrad, Parliament welcomed the main
ideas contained in the Davignon report on "European Employee Involvement
Systems" and in the Luxembourg Presidency's compromise proposal. It pleads
for flexibility in negotiations between management and labour in the
future European company, while insisting on the preservation of the rights
of unions anchored in the legislation of each Member State. Parliament
states that the regulation on worker participation should not to be
limited to the European company, as a share capital company, but if
necessary in an adapted form, extended to the statutes of the European
cooperative, the European mutual company and the European association. The
EP calls for employers' duties of information and consultation and
workers' participation rights to be binding and compulsory and matched
with effective controls and penalties in cases of violation or
infringement.
