Forum: Monitoring of Sweatshops
in the Campaign for Labor Rights newsletter

Beginning with our next issue, which is about to go to press, the Campaign
for Labor Rights newsletter will be hosting a forum on the subject of
independent monitoring. This is a highly disputed topic. Leading labor
rights organizations disagree on what constitutes independent monitoring
and, even, whether monitoring promotes or impedes the emergence of free
trade unions. For the next several months, each issue of our newsletter will
carry one position paper written by a key player in the movement.

The first paper in the series is by Jeff Ballinger, director of Press for
Change. Since the 1980s, Ballinger has been tracking Nike labor abuses in
Indonesia. Ballinger's paper has some surprises, even for those who have
worked closely with him in the Nike campaign. His paper will be of interest
to a variety of readers, from seasoned Nike campaign activists to others,
newer to the sweatshop movement.

single entry in this important and timely forum on monitoring. Send $35.00
